Nice car, the list of modifications is pretty impressive.
I like what you did under the hood ;)
Thankfully you didn't mount this hideous btcc front lip :ok:

What is the power output of your leon?

This is my best ever graph. From various other rolling roads power ranges from 240-250bhp.

Obrazek

My last rolling road day recently I got 238bhp and 362lb/ft. Car was quite smokey and next day i found MAF was dieing, airfilter was dirty. I have since bought a new air intake system and MAF ready for big service this friday :)

Hopefully should sort problem. ;)

Thanks Stan :ziew:

Yes which is why I took a look at MAF and Airbox as I knew something wasnt right. Since I cleaned air filter car is pulling much better but still smokey due to MAF values not being accurate so atomisation of fuel isnt as good as it could be.

Hello jonjay, nice to see guest from UK on our forum!
Your Leon looks like a twin brother of Stan's car :ok: Great job under the hood!

What has happened to your fog headlamps? Or it's just an extra cooling system... ;-)

P.S.
I'm very impressed by the fact that you managed to register properly on Leonclub.pl and even tried to translate our tricky language :)
I have to say that some of polish speaking guys hardly cope with that ;-)

I have a twin cold air feed running from both fog lights. Works pretty well on the move, gives nice induction noise.

I think I accidentally pressed the ignore button or ban button on you...help! :(

Yes I think I am at the limit of what the turbo can do. Maybe in future I might go bigger but for the moment I will be getting watermeth to increase power and efficiency.

Turbo is running 1.9 bar.

in the top right corner of every post, there's "ignoruj" button - obviously means "ignore", so you're going to ingore every single post written by the ignored user.
Next to the "ignoruj", to the right, there is a little icon of a quotation mark - you should use it, while you would like to quote, single word or sentence, generally speaking it's selective quotation. To do this, highlight a desired text (i.e. I did it a while ago, with your sentence "by the way how do I...") and then click this small button with the quotation mark on it. At the bottom of the page, you'll see a quick reply textbox and quote in it.
The next button, with quotation mark and the word "cytuj" which, literally means "quote" is to quote a whole massage.

jonjay napisał(a):I will be getting watermeth to increase power and efficiency.

good move ;)

Apexi Air Intake & SuperPro Bush + the rest
-----

Friday the car was at AmD Essex for cambelt, metal waterpump and full service. Also during the server I took the opportunity to put on some upgrades. I have heard a lot about these new Super Pro Bushes. From what I have been told by basically everyone at AmD is they are a very good company, very organised and listen to all feedback. They use a slightly difference grade of poly for their bushes and they fit much better than other brands they have used.

SuperPro Dogbone Mount Kit
On that information I decided to opt for SuperPro Dogbone Mount kit. I noted that the kit actually came with an additional bush that goes on the end of the mount. Also the shape of the bushes matched the OE style perfectly, my existing powerflex ones did not.

They come in 3 variants. Petrol, Diesel and Race. Each are a different grade of poly with the Diesel one being specifically made to get the performance of the strong poly bush but without the vibrations associated with rival brands.

Obrazek

Obrazek

Obrazek

They are really really good!! I noticed instantly that the constant vibration/buzz on idle had died down a lot, it just felt like a different car. When driving it was a joy as the harshness of the engine just wasn't there no more. I was also pleased that performance of the mounts was still the same. All in all these are a dream come true for us Diesel owners. Not sure what the petrol variant is like but I am sure they will be just as good.

SuperPro Steering Rack Bush
I heard that the steering rack bush makes steering a more reactive. Comparing the OEM bush and the SuperPro one the SuperPro one was a lot more solid.

Obrazek

Results
The steering a tad lighter. When i took the car for some spirited driving I didn't really notice much difference between the standard one. I only really noticed it when driving slowly just felt a tad lighter and easier to turn where you wanted.

Apexi Power Intake

Apexi Power Intake went on no problems thanks to all the info Adam gave me earlier. AmD did have to give me a mount as the one I got from B&Q as crap.

Obrazek

Results
Well you can certainly hear it sucking in air when the car is idling which is reassuring that it is working. As I had a new MAF installed at the same time I cannot tell whether I have gained any horses or not. When i drove it today with Slick in passenger seat (first day of adaptation) we both noted that the delivery of the power is much much much smoother than it has ever been before. This is either the intake or the MAF but further up the rev range it seems to hold the power a little more consistently.

The sound of the intake is just awesome. People certainly know I am coming down the road with the loud whistle of the turbo and the induction noise that follows. The downside is that all my turbo flutter and air going back up the tip on gear change has gone/cant be heard. This isn't really a negative as but hey it was nice when i had it. Overall I am glad I haven't lost any performance and that its running very well.

Service, Cambelt and MOT
AmD Luke noticed that the top mounts had some play in them. I was shocked as they were replaced 6 months ago when the KW V3s were installed. After a constuctive conversation with Shaun we both agreed that an uprated solution would be best considering all the modifications I have done in the past.

034 Motorsport TRACKDENSITY Strut Top Mounts have been ordered.

TRACKDENSITY Mounts are also solid rubber mounts, but with an 80 durometer approx 90% stiffer than stock, these are solid for all practical purposes and result in very good upper strut location with little slop or movement. Perfect for aggressive street use or track/rally use.

Car is booked in next week to get these installed. Hopefully my VF Drop Links will arrive too!

Service and cambelt went very smoothly, has made the engine run a tad quieter. I got an opportunity to look underneath the car at the H&S pipework. Pretty please with their work :)

AmD Luke said this was the most highly maintain diesel he ever worked on which made my day. Big thanks to everyone at AmD as usual for top quality work. Got to see the BTCC car being built throughout the day, amazing bit of kit.

Car feels stiffer on the front end in normal everyday driving. They really start to work when you start throwing the car round corners and start changing directions when exiting a turn which demands more of the anti roll bar. Just allows the car to change direction without this delay it had before. These are all small changes but as I drive the car the changes feel massive to me. I just love the way the car feels now and knowing that the drop links makes the ARB work to its full potential is a real confidence booster. Car feels pointy, direct and stiff so job done in that respect.

Future
Just waiting for the 034 Motorsport top mounts to come through and the handling mods are complete. :)

034 Motorsport Mounts
-----

034 Motorsport Mounts were fitted today at AmD.

When comparing the 034 vs OEM mounts, they virtually look identical with the difference being weight and solidness (is that a word?).

The good news is that they have not caused any more vibration what so ever. They haven't made a massive difference like the drop links have but they have made a difference in high speed cornering. Car feels more planted mid corner as they don't allow the suspension arm to move like the standard mounts do. I also noticed that when going over bumps and various road surfaces you get a lot more feedback in a good way. The bumps I expected but getting more feel was unexpected but welcomed.

The bad news? I suppose compared to standard mounts they are costly. oh well.

I am pleased to say they are worth every penny.

WHATS NEXT??? Car will be going back in a couple of weeks (should have the new ibiza to ride around in which I am really looking forward to) for new remap. Also looking into heatsheild for the air filter and getting the 5.5ltr washer tank ready for watermeth when I can afford it.

Road Trip
-----

Managed to wash and top up the protection of the car on Friday night. I thought it was a lovely day to go on a little bit of a road trip to test out the suspension setup. Car is feeling great with the only thing letting it down in handling terms is the Falken 452s. I just don't feel they can deal with the initial burst of torque and its getting harder to tell when they are going to let go.

Remembered I had the camera in the car so took some piccies.

Hello,

Yes I haven't posted for a long time. Very hard for me when I dont read a word of polish to navigate the site. :)

I have done a few things since I last posted. Here is some copy and paste!

R32 Steering wheel

Obrazek

Obrazek

Seals + Rear Brakes On + Spare Wheel completed

Rear brakes fitted and some maintenance work done on the car. I requested that all the seals on the car to be replaced to sort out the weeping problems.

- EGR seal replaced so boost leak sorted there. Also new Silicone hose that fits better has been fitted
- SFS Turbo Fixing. The seal was not the correct size. This was mainly due to it being an early version of the fixing so the groove for the seal was not deep enough. The result of this was boost leak from the turbo that just got worse over time. Seal was replaced with a better suited one which looks to have resolved this leak.
- FMIC fixing - all seals replaced so weeping at the FMIC connections has been resolved.

Net results is that the car feels quite responsive. Not sure if any performance has been gained as I haven't pushed it but definitely runs better now.

I had the rear brakes fitted albeit without the dust guards as they didn't come in time. Still bedding them in so will give full review once its 100%.

Obrazek

I had time today to cleanup the spare wheel (new wheel placed on car and the spare is the damaged wheel I am getting refurbed hence the cleaning). I de-tarred, clayed and polished with Autoglym SRP. Took be around 30 minutes but it was well worth it! SRP works really well on alloys and it proved it today by getting rid of staining that claying couldn't shift.

Obrazek

This is now ready to be put in the boot. Going to use bubble wrap until I carpet the wheel well.

H&S 3" DP and Turbo Outlet Design Review

Done a lot of driving and running around this weekend so this has put me in a good position to give a “small” review of the new exhaust and turbo outlet pipe.

Scope of the upgrade
I went for a full 3" Exhaust System for the following reasons.

1) Remove the restriction of the Miltek DP. The miltek DP is very good however the outlet of the downpipe is still stock and only goes to 2.5" once past the metal flexi part. This is fine for standard 150PDs and Hybrids however in the quest for more power going bigger is the only way. This also will set me up nicely for if and when I upgrade turbo.

2) Lower Exhaust Gas Temperatures! In the quest for more power its essential to keep the temps in check and with the older exhaust setup it was always in the back of my mind. If I want to do a long trip and track the car on the ring then I want lower EGTs for sure. 3" DP should flow more and thus reduce EGTs. Hopefully turbo will live longer too.

3) Lower noise. Ever since I got the new tip and the 3" piping to center silencer the exhaust was much louder than I liked. I some occasions it was nice to hear the wastegate chatter and the roar when accelerating. Other times I thought it was just too loud and not what the car was about. Knowing that 3" would increase noise I opted for 2 high flow silencers instead of one.

4) See if there are any performance improvements. the 17/22 Hybrids produce amazing results for the size of turbo they are. Some people say 2.5" is more than enough and even fewer say 3" DP improves anything at all.

Sound
When listening to the car on idle the exhaust note is now virtually non existing compared to before. The sound before was very hissy however now the hiss has gone. There is a burble especially now I added some miles and the car warms up but not a massive one. Inside the cabin however the engine note is now a lot lower but louder and it growls nicely when bliping the throttle. When driving normally there is a low gentle burble and definitely a lot lower noise than before. Changing gear there is not hint of a pigeon noise from the back either.

The exhaust really starts to open up at 3.5k. You get a lovely throaty sound but without the same high decibel roar I got before. It certainly makes the car feel grown up and expensive now.

Power
Squeezing the throttle you get power delivery that is now much more immediate. I would love the see the graph because it definitely feels like there is more power lower down. Definitely smoother power delivery and knowing that I said this many times I just can’t believe that there can be so much improvement from freeing up the exhaust. The power delivery was silky smooth before but now there is more torque availability lower down and it doesn't seem to tail off! The Miltek DP and centre silencer must have been more restrictive than I first thought. I am trying NOT to sound too enthusiastic about the difference as I am well aware that many of my previous performance mods made things more powerful and smoother. However I am beginning to wonder whether now I am at the limit of how smooth the power delivery can be with this turbo…seems too good to be true.

Past 3.5k that’s when things really begin to get interesting. It feels very much like a petrol in the sense that the power and sense of speed keep building as the revs climb. At 4K there still seems to be plenty of puff and the engine doesn’t sound as strained as before.

Playtime
As I stated before I had a little play with a new Porsche Carrera S within the speed limit of course (believe they are now 3.8ltr units instead of 3.6ltr and pushing an impressive 355bhp). I think the chap was a little shocked at what he found when he tried to stick on my bum when I first started to test the exhaust. Definitely felt confident in accelerating with the turbo outlet sorted and the new exhaust. I made a good account for myself and I think the fact he could over take me must have annoyed him no end.

Pros
+ Droning noise gone at 70mph
+ Great torque delivered more smoothly
+ Nice and quiet when driving normally.
+ Sounds grown up now and suits the car better
+ Definitely more performance. Might not be bhp but its added something!

Cons
- Expensive
- Got an annoying rattle because its so big. Can be sorted though
- Bang for buck may be lower in the grand scheme of things

MOT, TAX, Service and more cleaning #Update

Took the car down to good ole AmD today for service. Car has covered just over 40k miles which isnt bad for a 6 year old car. Brilliant service from AmD as always, gave the car a good checking over as part of the service.

+ VAGCOM adaption reset done. Car was sluggish as I been taking it easy for several months so ECU adapted down a fair bit. Now so she is now back to her sprightly self.
+ New OSRAM nightbreaker v2 main beam lights have been installed. Definitely brighter when flashing people but need to go on a country lane with no lights to see if they really do the business
+ New Fabia rear wiper blade installed.
+ New Left hand Drive Dual Mirror installed. Really does take some getting used to when driving as I never had one of the left side on any car i have driven regularly. It works really well on motorway and on busy 3 lane roads.

Toy T1-Rs now all running 32PSI. These are really starting to scrub in now. Done about 100 miles in them and they really are night and day difference to falken452s. Falken 452s are a good tyre however the Toyos are much better suited for heavy diesel lump and the torque that comes with it.

The Mrs was complaining how I dont look after her car like mine. Also I hadn't detailed the car since the cement fiasco so last week I done a full detail on the car. I should have really done a write up but thing I am getting a tad lazy recently with detail write-ups. Got to start doing them again. Anyway This week I re-waxed her car, went mental on the inside with the interior protectant and dressings. She is a happy bunny now.

jonjay, your car is very impresiv, piece of a good job !!
but there's a few detail, that you can still improve in your car, for example you can mount black interior from Cupra
why don't you buy cupra's stearing wheel ??
you wrote about problems with EGR, why don't you completly remove them ??
then you can install mainfold from Passat AWX, then you can install pipe from IC much shorter then you have now
You have mounted Apexi power intake, don't you worry about mass air flow sensor ??
I've heared, that a lot of dirt goes because of that sort of air filter

PS. I've for sale original original pedal pads from Cupra R (UK version) ;)
